[Kaohsiung News] The Department of Fashion Design of Shu-Te University, Year 3
student Guo Pei Yu received the "Reset & Fly" Bronze Medal and Superior Award for
Student Leung Kai Mei’s: “Forest-Crisis”2022 The 3 rd Real Leather. Stay Different.
Student Design Competitions.

Student Leung Kai Mei from Hong Kong has not returned to her home country for
more than a year due to the pandemic. After experiencing several times of
quarantine life, she felt deeply the difficulties of life and the vision, like a reflective
key, liberating herself from the caged bird. Therefore, in the creation of the work
"Reset & Fly", she hopes to reform her life. It said, “I yearn for freedom, to fly at will,
to live in my own rhythm.”

The work "Reset & Fly" by Student Kuo is based on a variety of black leather, cage
skirt, vest, and metal ties, expressing the feeling of multiple pressure of
imprisonment. The wings, feathers, and flight paths that symbolize freedom of flight
are expressed in the under-waist skirt and hair styling, presenting the overall
freedom that is being revived under the suppression.

According to Student Leung, the demand for cartons has increased due to the
pandemic of promoting online shopping, which has led to massive deforestation and
forest desertification. She used multiple pockets to present the image of stacking
cartons, the structure of the recycling logo, and the spray-painted text to express the
symbolic meaning of the environment being persecuted due to human desires in a
military style.

The instructor Ms. Sophie stated that fashionable, durable, and classic are the
impressions that leather design brings to people. The Student Design Competition is
to enable the new generation of designers to focus more on design creativity,
contemporary aesthetics, and using sustainable materials, which is one of the
responsibilities of designers to create a friendly environment.

Ms. Sophie further stated the two award-winning students spent the summer break
of their junior year in the department's classroom every day trying to create the
material. Once they started getting familiar with the materials and they took on the
new challenge of leather. To understand the beauty of leather materials, they also
feel the difficulty of interpreting the works and hard to recognize the difference
between a leather jacket and a leather bag, both in terms of their volume and weight
or the detail or edge of the bag.

Department Hung-Jen Chen said that the experience and achievements
accumulated by the two students such as pattern, sewing, interpretation work, and
displaying work, are all become their professional growth during the competition. We
are looking forward to our juniors continuing their success and challenging
themselves to achieve better results.

The Real Leather. Stay Different. Student Design Competitions is organized by the
Leather & Hide Council of America (L&HCA) in cooperation with leather-related

Kingdom, China, and Taiwan, and selected the best works. In the last competition,
Taiwan has 540 entries and 34 design schools participated, making it the most
