【Kaohsiung News】A delegation of 105 students and teachers from Sasebo Industrial High School in Japan visited Shu-Te University. During the visit, a tripartite agreement was signed between Sasebo High School, the Taiwan Study Abroad Support Center, and Shu-Te University. In the future, Shu-Te University will provide various educational resources, while the Taiwan Study Abroad Support Center will offer Chinese language training and support for Sasebo students interested in studying in Taiwan. Led by Chairman Sanko Goto and Principal Koji Nakamura, the delegation of 96 students and 7 accompanying staff members embarked on a 5-day educational trip to Taiwan.

Shu-Te University President Wang Chao-hsiung expressed gratitude to the Taiwan Study Abroad Support Center for the recommendation that led Sasebo High School to choose Shu-Te University as their destination. He emphasized the importance of the exchange between the two schools and the collaboration involving the three parties. President Wang mentioned that although the exchange began in 2021, the severe pandemic prevented the realization of learning experiences. The visit by Sasebo High School students and teachers allowed for concrete interactions, and President Wang thanked the Taiwan Study Abroad Support Center for its crucial role. He also looked forward to students exploring Shu-Te University’s professional courses during the experience activities.

Chairman Sanko Goto of Sasebo Industrial School Foundation further stated that Sasebo High School has focused on international exchange for over a decade during graduation trips. He highlighted the remarkable development of Asian countries, with Taiwan leading the world in advanced IT industries. Sasebo views Taiwan as a humble learning partner and hopes students will have the opportunity to understand Taiwan better. With the signed cooperation agreement, Sasebo’s graduates will have the chance to come to Shu-Te University as international students next year, adding a new chapter to Sasebo High School’s 58-year history. Chairman Goto expressed gratitude for the warm reception from Shu-Te University and wished success and prosperity to President Wang, former Vice President Yen Ta-kuo, and all faculty and students.

To allow Japanese students to deeply understand Shu-Te University’s teaching characteristics, the university planned a series of hands-on experiences, including “Mouse Pad Coloring” in the Visual Communication Design Department, “Drone” in the Information Management Department, and “Virtual Sports” in the Department of Esports and Computer Entertainment Science. The experiential courses brought excitement and joy to the students.

The welcoming performance featured two dances designed by Director Yu Hsiu-ching and students from the Department of Performing Arts. The dance “Forbidden Zone” conveyed a sense of suffocation in a bound world, portraying the struggle to break free and find an exit, reflecting human nature. The dance “Indigo” represented the color indigo, a splendid shade between blue and purple. Through a combination of modern dance and popular street dance, the performance aimed to convey the feeling of “indigo” to the audience. The dance performance received enthusiastic applause.

During the welcome event, Japanese students Bika Lin and Delin Yutian, who are studying in the Applied Foreign Languages Department at Shu-Te University, shared their experiences of studying in Taiwan, improving their Chinese proficiency, and participating in diverse extracurricular activities. The International and Cross-Strait Affairs Office prepared Taiwanese specialties such as Dandan Hamburgers, traditional noodles, pearl milk tea, and Gua Gua snacks for the short but thoughtful exchange time.

At the welcome event, President Wang, Vice Presidents Su Chung-ho and Chen Hsi-huang, Dean of Student Affairs Yen Shih-hui, Vice President for General Affairs Sung Hung-chi, and Director Yu Hsiu-ching from the Department of Performing Arts warmly interacted with the Sasebo students and teachers.

Sasebo High School is located in Sasebo City, Nagasaki Prefecture, at the westernmost tip of Kyushu, Japan. The city boasts beautiful coastal terrain and served as the opening scene for the Hollywood film “The Last Samurai.” It is an ancient military port city where both the U.S. military and the Maritime Self-Defense Force are stationed. Additionally, since the Edo period, Nagasaki has been the only gateway to the world for Japan. During Japan’s policy of national seclusion, trade was conducted only with a few countries, and Nagasaki was the place of trade.
