Shu-Te University won amazingly with the silver medal at The 52nd National

[Kaohsiung News] The topic of the 52nd National Worldskill Competition organized by the
Ministry of Labor is “One skill, one winner." The Department of Visual Communication won
a silver medal in the graphic dinner by junior student Chen Pei Yu while Senior Wu Wang
Yin won fourth place. Both graduated from St. Joseph Technical Senior High School Interior
Design and National Tainan Commercial Vocational Senior High School Advertising Design.
If Student Chen is qualified as a national champion, she will represent our country at the 47th
Worldskills Competition in Lyon. The Department of Visual Communication has trained five
national experts with experienced instructors, allowing students to use their skills to win and
lose, to shine in their professional skills, and to accumulate courage and bravery. 

There are 56 vocational categories in the teenage groups and 12 vocational categories in the
youth teams. This competition is held from the 31st of July to the 7th of August at five
competition venues in the North, Central, and South regions of the workforce development
agency, Ministry of Labor Taichung-Changhua-Nantou Regional Branch. A total of 975
contestants will participate in the competition. The Youth Group is for ages 13 to 15, and the
Teenager Group is for ages 21 and younger. Gold, Silver, and Bronze medal winners will be
eligible to represent our country at the Worldskill Asia Kuala Lumpur 2023 and Worldskills
Lyon 2024 in France. Students will also be rewarded scholarships, exemptions from
academic exams, and incentives for further education.

Student Chen, the silver medal winner expressed her excitement that she received third place
in the Southern Region and the silver medal in the national competition for the first time. She
felt so thankful to many teachers, seniors, teammates that trained together, and family
members for supporting her. Without their support, it would be hard to get on the stage and
win the award as this honor belongs to all of us. She still remembers the tiredness and hard
times during the training day. The day she stayed at school for training during the summer
and winter break. Student Chen was very grateful to her friends and family for their tolerance
and assistance, which allowed her to focus more during the training period.

Senior Wu Wang Yin said that this year was the very first and last participation in this
competition. She was engaged in thematic production and came in fourth place from the
regional to the national level. Student Wu would like to thank the panelists for their
understanding. For her to be a contestant is a part-time job, it is one of her life plans, so she
could consider it an excuse to put things off.

The Dean of the College of Design, Mr. Chung-Ho, Su pointed out that the Department of
Visual Communication has started training for skill competitions since 2004. They produced
five national contestants, one international gold medal, eight national gold medals, seven
silver medals, and three bronze medals by 2022. They have won awards almost continuously
every year with the professional ability of the faculty and students of the Department of
Visual Communication.

The first day of the competition was on the design of lunchboxes and structural packaging for
the "Taiwan Children's Lunchbox". The second day was designing tri-fold pages and
logotypes for the "Toppan Printing Co Australia Pty Ltd". The last day was the design of the
cover, still, and motion infographics for the YouTube channel. The theme was positive,
environmental, and circular; the topics included creative ideas, graphics, illustration, visual

design, infographic design, three-dimensional structure technology, computer graphics
technology, pre-press work, and image composition. The questions are complex and diverse,
with 70% of the subjective score and 30% of the objective score.

The training instructor for this Worldskills competition coaching team includes Department
Head Mr.Yang, Chao-Fu, as well as by Mr. Yang, Yu Lung, Ms.Liu, I-Tsen Ms.Chen, Mei-
Jung from the Department of Animation, and Ms.Min-Chen Yu, the instructor of Kaohsiung
Municipal Haichin Vocational High School of Technology and Commerce other alumni or
contestants from the Department of Visual Communication, Yu-Chi Lin, Xin-Yi Hsieh, Fan-
Hsi Huang, and Yu-Chen Huang share their experiences.
