The international students of Shu-Te University feel blissful with the complete guidance course 111.2.14

【Kaohsiung News] International students from Shu-Te University are lucky to have guidance at the campus which is also the first stop from our university collaboration by our Student Affairs Office, General Affairs Office, International and Cross-Strait Affairs Office, and Academic Affairs Office. This guidance is to build a tutoring course that allows international students to have a professional internship and part-time job, which does not affect their studying but also strengthens the Chinese language and makes up for economic gaps.

Participating in the guidance course are international students from our university, said by Dean of Student Affairs, Yen Shih-Hui. The Overseas Student Resource Section will be the full-time assistants to guide the students on campus life, also arrange the students to stay together at the dormitory. Besides that, applying for the residence permit, work permit, and health insurance card of the students will be assisted by The Overseas Student Resource Section while they are in Taiwan. Internships and part-time jobs are assisted by full-time assistants in the tutoring course.

Our university offers a four-year 3 major course +1 Mandarin course for students from non-Chinese-speaking countries, such as Japan, Indonesia, Vietnam, etc. During their freshman year, they will study Chinese at International Teaching and Language Center, Chinese Teaching Division. They will return to their department by starting their major classes. The department will arrange 4 hours of Chinese courses and after-school tutoring every week to allow international students to integrate the environment and academic studies in Taiwan. The new southbound students recruited this year will be adjusted to 12 hours of Chinese language courses and after-school tutoring per week to help students obtain Chinese A2 qualifications.

Director He Sheng Tong from JMC Electronics has publicly affirmed that Shu-Te University’s norms and guidelines for students are excellent, which makes him very relieved and is also a crucial factor in becoming a partner. He also worried about the basic needs of students while entering a foreign country, which he also does not regard students as laborers. He mentions that cooperation with Shu-Te University over the past three years has given the company no worries.

The students’ internships and part-time jobs are arranged by their department to find a cooperative manufacturer and sign a contract. It is stipulated that the number of internship and part-time hours is 40 hours not to exceed the time limit, the internships must arrange outside of class during the week, and 20 hours of part-time jobs will be arranged on weekends. It is unlikely that students will need additional part-time jobs; the department will also clearly inform students of relevant norms and regulations through internship briefings, and arrange two dedicated teachers to visit the student’s internship at the beginning and end of each semester.

Dean of Student Affairs, Yen Shih-Hui stated that setting up an international student association (ISA) is to help enrich the campus life so that domestic and international students can learn to respect multiculturalism and quickly adapt to life in Taiwan campus. The student participation rate is quite active while ISA organizes those events. The events will start with freshmen pick-up activities, teacher meetings, orientation camps, various festivals, Spring Festival ancestor worship activities, and farewell parties for graduates.

Our university also has a halal kitchen and prayer room for countries with different religions. It started with the first class of students in the Department of Information Management of our university for the halal kitchen. Most Muslim students who believe in Islam have special needs in terms of life and diet. The Halal kitchen is a very convenient setting to take care of the eating habits of Muslim students. It also allows all residential students to register for use but avoids the food taboo to learn to respect different cultural beliefs.

A simple chapel will be in the Department of Information Management for Muslim students for worship classes, and a place of worship where provided in the dormitory.
